Comic Reading for the Week #9
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, Moon Knight, & Marvel Two-In-One: The Thing & Spider-Man and The Avengers!
Greetings, everyone! It’s been a couple of weeks since our last newsletter on the fifth and final episode of Ms. Marvel, but we are back. I only discussed two mags in the previous comic reading with some additional Spidey content. There will be more comics in this one, and instead of bonus Spidey content, we’ll talk about some old-school Avengers! I’ll update you guys on some titles we’ve already discussed, and we’ll start a new one. I’m very excited to talk about comics with you guys again because it feels like it has been forever since the last one. So, buckle up, comic comrades! Let’s dive into some comic books!
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear #3 (Dec 1993) Vol 1
Whew. The last time I talked about Daredevil was way back in April. It’s been a great start to the series, but will it hold up with this one? In the final panels for issue number two, Elektra jumped off a cliff for fun. That’s right, for fun. For the start of this mag, Elektra went through the ice and into the water. Matt followed her footsteps and tried to find her, but she was gone by the time he hit the water. Matt was pissed when he got back to his place. Foggy continued to talk about Elektra being a bad influence. He even told Matt where she lived. And what’s the first thing Matt does? Yeah, he made his way to her mansion. The night was filled with people and guards for the formal party. It was no problem for Matt, though. He found a way to get into Elektra’s room. He felt all her trophies, and it was a lot. He left her room and was surprised by a guard and a dog. The guard went through the window and landed on a piano that Elektra was playing. She didn’t stop playing it either. She wasn’t bothered by anything. What a real G. Matt made a run for it. He was upset with himself because he broke the rules. On his run out, he was shot. Matt was back at his place cleaning his wound. Once he finished, he realized he wasn't alone. But Foggy was outside, so it could only be one person. After twenty minutes passed, Foggy saw the whole room trashed and Matt sitting down with a smile on his face when he walked in. What a smooth man.
On a cold night, Elektra is out in the city. She overheard a group of men talking about the horrible actions they’ve done to innocent women. She lured them into an alley and started to undress. Once two men walked up to her, she brutally attacked them and killed them. She did the same thing for the rest of the guys there. Every kill was brutal while being half naked in the winter air. Such a seductive way to go out, amirite? Eventually, Elektra and Matt started training together. The more they trained, the more they fell in love. Matt was down bad. He couldn’t concentrate on anything happening in his daily life. Love is love, right? Well, Stick disagreed with that. He told Matt to stay away from her because she was dangerous. Matt didn’t listen, but things didn’t get better. Elektra’s father died, so she had to leave him. My guy was heartbroken. In another part of town, Don Rigoletto was meeting with his men since there had been some complaints about competitors overtaking them in the business. Rigoletto wasn't on board with any illegal activities. Nothing involving children, corruption, or drugs. He sent his men away, but one man stayed. He came up behind Rigoletto and started to massage him. It wasn’t a regular massage, though. The man in the dark snapped Rigoletto’s neck. The man walked into the light, and it was Wilson Fisk! Fisk was stepping up to become the Kingpin! Oh, yeah, it is getting better!
Moon Knight #12 (June 2022) Vol 9
It was almost time for Moon Knight and Zodiac to face off, but we would have to wait for a minute. Zodiac was startled by Mr. Knight’s appearance because he planned for Marc to be in Jersey at that very moment. He wasn’t buying it, though. Zodiac instantly shot Mr. Knight, who was Solider in disguised, and Reese. Tigra and Moon Knight were traveling through the resting space of the fists of Khonshu. They passed the souls of past Moon Knights, and the souls followed the two for trespassing their ground. Marc wasn’t sure if he would end up in that place, but they knew to ask Hunter’s Moon at a later time. Zodiac was pleased to have shot Soldier since he believed he always was looking for a way to die. Zodiac was interrupted by crescent darts. Moon Knight attacked him, but to Zodiac, it was nothing. He felt no pain, but he wasn’t worried about that. Zodiac was more frustrated about his plan not working out. Zodiac bragged about his outnumbered followers to Moon Knight’s small company, but he was in for a little treat. The souls of past Moon Knights arrived to aid Moon Knight in this battle. Moon Knight was a badass when he disarmed a cartel member with a chainsaw and used it for himself. A hard panel! Moon Knight planned to only focus on Zodiac. Zodiac was upset about the zombie Moon Knights because he had no idea how to prepare for them. His last option was the planned car bombs, but he had to get out of the blast radius. Hunter’s Moon freed himself and sent the souls of the past back to their ground. Zodiac thought he could get away, but a grieving Reese ragefully charged at him. She was close to the kill, but Marc stopped her. If she killed Zodiac, she would be no different than Marc. Instead of Reese killing Zodiac, Marc stepped up. He tried so hard to kill him, but someone was stopping him from killing Zodiac too. Steven Grant, one of Marc’s identities, felt if he killed Zodiac, they would lose Reese. Oh, what an ending! This is the first time Steven made an appearance in this run. I can't wait to pick up the next mag!
Marvel Two-In-One Presents The Thing and Spider-Man #2 Annual (Sep 1977) Vol 1
In the second annual Marvel Two-In-One, The Thing had to team up with an old pal, Spider-Man! I haven’t collected or read much of this series, but this annual caught my eye solely on the cover. It featured Thanos throwing Spidey towards The Thing while Adam Warlock’s face was trapped inside the Soul Gem. Not only did this issue feature Spider-Man. But also the Avengers and Captain Marvel! You know, I had to buy this mag. Let’s get into the actual story, though. Peter Parker couldn’t sleep because he was dreaming about a fight between The Avengers alongside Captain Marvel and Thanos. Eventually, the heroes were trapped, and the fate of the galaxy was in danger. In reality, it wasn’t a dream. Moondragon sent a telepathic call to Peter for aid. Peter had no idea why he was chosen for this task since he was just a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Lord Chaos and Master Order overlooked the event in hopes that Peter would do the right thing. Spidey had to find a spacecraft to travel to Thanos’ location, and the only person he could go to was The Thing, a member of the Fantastic Four. They went to space and found Thanos’ space ark. They were pulled in only to be faced with Thanos-thralls. Spider-Man and The Thind held their own until Thanos cut the gravity off. The two were captured. In the Soul Gem, Warlock met with Pip and Gamora. He hoped his stay would last, but who knows?
Spider-Man and The Thing regain consciousness in the same room the Avengers and Captain Marvel were placed. The Thing attacked Thanos but was quickly knocked out. Spider-Man had second thoughts about this whole idea. He felt he wasn’t up for this job. But Spidey’s good heart stopped him from leaving! He freed the heroes, and everyone attacked Thanos and his thralls! It was an all-out battle. A sight to see! It still wasn’t enough to defeat Thanos, though. Spider-Man’s spider-sense guided him to the Soul Gem and freed Adam Warlock. Thanos couldn’t believe his eyes. Adam returned because he couldn’t rest until the Mad Titan was defeated. With Warlock’s power, he turned Thanos into stone. The heroes held a funeral for Adam and his friends on an asteroid. They lost a good man, for sure. For the villainous Mad Titan, he was left in stone and had to suffer from his corruption.
The Avengers #7-10 (1964) Vol 1
I won’t talk about all of these individually because it would be so much, so I thought I would use these as bonus content for you guys. The Avengers for these mags were Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, Giant-Man, and Captain America. But Iron Man was banished from the Avengers at the start of issue seven. Issue number 7 dealt with the Executioner, Enchantress, and Baron Zemo. Together, they formed the Masters of Evil. They thought all three of them could defeat the Avengers with help from a mind-controlled Thor. But Earth’s mightiest heroes were able to pull through! Cap wanted revenge for the devastating death of Bucky at the hands of Zemo. Each Avenger gave it their all to defeat the Masters of Evil. In the end, Thor sent the Masters of Evil’s ship into space with no idea where they would end up. Issue number 8 was the first appearance of Kang the Conqueror. He planned to conquer planet Earth. The Avengers tried to defeat Kang, but they lost. Wasp was the only one who wasn't captured, so she and Rick Jones, with the Teen Brigade, formed a plan to free the Avengers. Once they were freed, the Avengers beat Kang and destroyed all his weapons. He had to flee and return to his own time.
Issue number 9 was about the creation of Wonder Man. The Masters of Evil were back and had an idea to defeat the Avengers. They recruited Simon Williams to make him an all-powerful hero. Zemo injected poison into him when he was first created. It was a way that Zemo could control the new hero. Wonder Man's first step was gaining the Avengers’ trust quickly. So, later on, he could betray them. The Masters of Evil were close to defeating the Avengers until Wonder Man turned on them. Double plot twist! Wonder Man turned on Zemo and Co. because the Avengers were willing to help him with his illness even though they didn’t know him. He saved the Avengers! It came with a cost, though. Wonder Man died due to Zemo’s poison. Issue number 10 featured a time-traveling villain called Immortus! He wanted to become an ally to the Masters of Evil. Immortus used Rick Jones, Cap’s sidekick, to turn Cap on the Avengers. He also sent Rick back to the past. Cap had to fight guards to free the young teen. When the Avengers fought Immortus, Immortus brought people from the past to use against the heroes. Goliath, Hercules, and the Wizard Merlin fought Giant-Man, Thor, and Iron Man. The rest of the Avengers dealt with the Masters of Evil. The Masters of Evil were once again close to defeating the Avengers, but the mighty Thor turned the tables. Overpowered by the Avengers, Enchantress sent the Masters of Evil back in time before they met Immortus. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes come on top again! I recommend reading these old issues because of the brilliant minds of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. It's full of crazy characters, cheesy dialogue, and wonderful art! I just love me some old-school comics.
