(Spoiler Warning!!)
So, I decided to do a short bullet discussion about Ms. Marvel episode two. I’ve been working so hard lately that I did not have enough time for my proper newsletter. I tried my best to find some time, but even on my Sunday break, I had no energy to do much plus Father’s Day. Anyways, this newsletter is only a few bullet points with some commentary. Episode one of Ms. Marvel was a joy to watch because of how heartwarming it felt. Hopefully, they continued that vibe in the second installment. Let’s get it, comic comrades!
Kamala’s Newfound Confidence -
Right away you felt a change in Kamala! I appreciated how her powers gave her more confidence even if it was quick. Later on, we’ll see how her powers aren’t always great or make her feel great about herself.
New Crush-Kamran -
It can’t be a high school environment without the crush, amirite? The introduction of Kamran. Kamala caught feeling real fast on the new student senior. I mean, she wanted to go to Zoe’s party. This must be one of many love at first sight for our girl. We’ll ride the boat with you, Kamala, don’t worry! I know he is from the comics, but I’m not sure how big of an arc he has. He could be a villain, oooouu.
Nakia as a Character -
I just want to shout out to Nakia for a second. We saw her a bit more during this episode, and she was brilliant. I love how her character is being written. She had one of the most relatable lines when she told Kamala she was running for the Mosque Board election. If your family came to the United States from another country, you’ll have moments where you felt like an outsider in America and your own country. You are too much of this or you are too much of that. But whenever you embrace something from your culture or where you grew up, you will feel like your true self.
Kamala’s Training/Inhuman or Kree?
The training montage was a lot of fun. The powers have grown on me because of how cool they look, haha. No, but seriously, they felt and look cosmic and that is my alleyway. If you know anything about me and comics, you’ll know I love the cosmic world. Other than Spider-Man, my favorite comic characters are from the cosmic realm. One of the things that Bruno said caught my attention, though. He said the bangle unlocked Kamala’s power, so the bangle isn’t the power source. Could they be hinting that Kamala Khan is still an Inhuman? It would be really cool if they did because I know a lot of fans were outraged by the power change. Another theory could be that Kamala has some Kree lineage. She is going to be in the sequel to Captain Marvel 2, so it could be possible. Who knows!
Party Comic Reference -
The alcohol scene was straight from the comics. It was the same night she saved Zoe from drowning. Fun comic fact, for those of you who don’t know, Kamala turned into Ms. Marvel when she first gain her powers. It was the OG look of Ms. Marvel too. I thought it was pretty cool.
Bruno’s Crush -
Bruno has a high school crush too, but it seems like Kamala isn’t into him. The dude had no emotion hearing he got in Caltech. He wants to stay in Jersey to be close to Kamala. I mean, they don’t even have to be together. I love Kamala and Bruno’s chemistry and friendship. It would be fine if they just helped each other grow as people.
Kamala’s Powers At School -
One of the best things about Ms. Marvel in the comics that I read so far was how she viewed herself. She wasn’t that confident in herself, and she wished she looked different than she did. Once she got her powers, she still wasn’t happy about the way she looked because she didn’t look like herself. She wanted to be someone else, but when she got what she wanted, it didn’t feel right. It felt similar here. She was excited about her powers, but when they started acting up again at random times, she felt out of place.
Kingo!
Not much to say, but I love the Eternals reference. We haven’t had a mention of them in any MCU project since it was released in theaters last November. They need some more love, to be honest.
Family History/Vision -
At the dinner scene, we learned about Muneeba’s story during the Partition. In one of the stories Yusuf talked about, Kamala’s grandmother was separated from her parents at a train station. Something odd happened, though. She couldn’t find her parents, but she got on the train before it took off. No one knows the true story about her getting the train. They simply said she followed the trail of stars to reunite with her father. Sana’s mother disappeared that night, though. Later on, we found out that Sana’s mother was Aisha. The bangle belonged to her. Was Aisha the woman Kamala saw in her vision? Could Aisha have been the first person who gained powers from the bangle? I’m very intrigued right now.
Agent Cleary -
I like how Agent Cleary’s tactic to interrogate high schoolers is to just agree with them or hype them up. It worked with Ned in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it seemed to work again here.
Kamala’s Big Save -
Kamala felt ready to take on her real big save. I know she saved Zoe at AvengerCon, but this one was one she was training for as a real hero. The way she spoke to the boy to calm him down was excellent. She is still struggling with her new powers, so the save wasn’t the best. Kamala will get there. Patience is key! Pizza Ice Cream, though? I mean, the combo sounds weird, but it could be one of the greatest combos of all time. Have you tried it?
Damage Control -
It seems like Damage Control is using Tony Stark’s drones. Is that ethical? Using the drones you confiscated after the whole Spider-Man identity crisis? Are they going to be another big organization that is evil in the end? I sure hope not.
Kamran’s Mother -
So, Kamran’s mother is the same woman who Kamala saw in her vision, right? I’m pretty that is the same lady. I could be wrong. But that would make Kamala and Kamran related, right? So the crush would be super weird. At least she didn’t technically lie to her brother then.
Final Thoughts
Whew, I won’t say much because I’m on a timer right now. I will say that I’m still enjoying the show. Ms. Marvel has welcoming energy if that makes sense. I just feel good watching it. Kamala’s family history is very interesting, and I’m ready to explore more of it. I’m not sure how well the representation is for the series. I hope most people feel like they are being portrayed in a great way for the world to see. Again, I want to apologize. I try my best to fit these newsletters into my schedule because I love talking about these shows and comics with you all. It has been hectic at work, though. I’m going on a family trip this weekend, so that means I’ll be reading a bunch of comics for Comic Reading for the Week. And I’ll have time to release the next newsletter on time. Let’s hope that happens, comic comrades.
I’m happy you took the time out of your day to read my post. Remember, if you have any questions or want to have a discussion, leave a comment! The following newsletter will be a Comic Reading for the Week, then Ms. Marvel episode three. Stay tuned! Happy days and take care!
